Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Myungsup Shin has played most jazz venue between 2005 to 2009 in Seoul where he rapidly established himself on the Korea jazz scene. After his musical careers in Korea, he moved to USA in September. 2009 then he is continuing to develop his advanced knowledge and musical careers with the greatest musicians.
Under his father Mr. Dong Jin Shin who is a professional jazz saxophone player and educator, Myungsup began learning saxophone. In 2003, he entered JEI college and received diploma in Jazz performance. After his studying at the college, for the obligation of army service, he served in Korean National Army Band
which is the best army band that only a few high level players could be selected in Korea. During that peiod, Myungsup has sent to Iraq to serve the locals by his music.
In Oct. 2008, Myungsup won the second prize at the 2th Jara International
jazz competition which is a part of the most famous jazz festival called “Jara Island Jazz Festival” in Korea. In 2009, he has selected one of the rising stars in 2009 by renowned jazz magazine “Jazz People”. Following the award, he has appeared a jazz broadcast “EBS SPACE GONGKAM” with the rising stars 2009. After playing with most top level jazz players in Korea for 4 years, he relocated to New York to develop his musical skills in September, 2009. For 2 years, Myungsup has played as one of members of NYKJO “ New York Korean Jazz Orchestra”, and participated a few of big events organized by New York based Korean American society. While he was playing and studying with New York based some great players, he got scholarship
from The New School and Berklee College of Music and decided to move to Boston to attend the prestigious Beklee in January 2012. From his first semester at Berklee,
Mr. Bill Pierce the woodwind department chair of Berklee put him with Geore Garzone with the think of his high level of academic. Under George Garzone’s confidence toward to Myungsup, George suggested him to participate his new lesson DVD “ Random Augmented, Diminished and Chromatic Approach which is supposed to be released in summer 2013 by Jody. At the 3rd semester at Berklee, Myungsup has selected one of Berklee Global Jazz Institute which is directed by Danilo Perez.
As a member of BGJI, Myungsup has been studying with Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Adam Cruz and Joe Lovano. By his deep studying with George Garzone, he has shared stage with George Garzone at the Beklee High School Jazz Festival. So far, he is continuing his studying at Berklee with amazing educators and fellows.
